Epoxy Painted Floors

Epoxy painted floors are perfect for commercial and industrial use due to the tremendous durability of the finished flooring surface. Remarkable for their versatility and strength, epoxy floors are a high performance, premium product that has an incredibly long lifespan. Epoxy is a thermosetting resin that is made up of 2 separate substances that when combined, chemically react to produce a hard coating.

One part epoxy resin and one part polyamine hardener are mixed together to create a surface with immense strength. There are three categories of epoxy; traditional solvent based epoxy, which needs certain precautions during application but can create a thin film; water-based epoxy is less hazardous to apply; 100% solid epoxy is more difficult to apply without the fluid carrier.

Whichever type of epoxy is most suitable for your project, it is always advisable to use experienced professionals. At CICS, we ensure it is applied properly and safely. Careful preparation is required to ensure a good finish and wet epoxy has strong fumes. We’ll always be incredibly diligent with handling and laying it in order to get the best result.

Benefits

Epoxy is trusted by professionals for its durability and versatility, as it can be used for a variety of domestic, commercial and industrial applications. The inherent strength of epoxy painted floors allows them to stand up to even the most demanding industrial environments.

Extremely versatile, epoxy can be applied to a number of surface materials including wood, metal, cement and concrete and can even be used as an undercoat. It is most commonly used on concrete floors and ideal for garages both residential and commercial.

Epoxy offers incredible adhesion, versatility and toughness. The possibility of being formulated to specific performance requirements makes epoxy a valuable floor coating. It is highly recommended by professionals as it is a premium floor coating.

How It Works

Once the chemical reaction takes place the substance hardens to form a rigid plastic surface that will bond remarkably well to the substrate. Available in a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish, the completed floor surface will be resistant to degradation.

A finished epoxy painted floor is resistant to almost everything. Garages use them as they resist fuel, oil and grease. They are tough enough to resist scuffing, peeling, cracking and blistering. Whilst also resistant to heat, water, chemicals and solvents.

Above all that, epoxy painted floors are resistant to germs and can be easily sanitised. It also forms a protective layer which preserves the concrete underneath from any stains or cracking, which will save you money in the long run on cleaning and maintenance.

Variety of Options

Epoxy painted floors also lend themselves well to design options allowing you to get creative or provide you with an opportunity to incorporate branding. Before drying, the floor can be sprinkled with various materials to produce personalised patterns.

Using this same technique with sand or similar abrasives, other textures can be formed to provide additional slip resistance through extra grip. This is particularly useful in areas that will need to withstand heavy traffic and will extend the lifespan of the floor surface.

Epoxy is a premium quality floor surface that provides excellent value when you consider how long it lasts. When installed professionally, epoxy floors will last longer than most other flooring types. It will rarely crack or peel, providing you with a long lifespan of decades.

Things to Consider

To install an epoxy painted floor requires preparation of the substrate, and a number of coats, depending on the particular requirements of your project. These usually consists of a base coat, one or two epoxy coats and a decorative or textured coat and a top coat.

Once the top coat has been applied you can expect to wait a minimum of 24 hours before foot traffic can be accepted onto the floor, a further 24 hours before placing items on the floor and 72 hours in total before vehicle traffic should be allowed on the floor.

Our experts at CICS will always test for moisture in the concrete before installation. This is important as epoxy can’t be used if moisture is present in the substrate as it creates a barrier that traps the water underneath, which will eventually lead to adherence problems.
